Year's End Restaurant Rumors

Now that El Día de Los Inocentes is behind us, I can safely pass on the rumor I heard the day before yesterday.

A well placed source informed me that the operator of the Gran Hotel Restaurant in Pátzcuaro would be reopening the Cha Cha Cha Restaurant on Calle Buena Vista before long.

It's unclear at this point whether the CCC name would be retained or changed.

This could be a welcome development, as the CCC space is a great setting, and the food at the present Gran Hotel is good.

Meanwhile, the Subway sandwich location, on the northeast corner of Pátzcuaro's Plaza Grande is slowly being developed. When I last peeked in, the wiring was being installed. This may or may not be opened in our lifetimes, which is either a good or a bad thing, depending on your outlook.

If you just can't wait for a Subway sandwich, there's a store open in a glittering new bulding adjoining a Pemex plaza, a few miles down the highway to Pátzcuaro out of Morelia.

Remember; you read it here first. (I guess.)

Feliz Año Nuevo.

Well I wish them good luck, maybe they will be able to provide a consistent experience that the old owners had a tough time in doing. Every time we brought friends in, the experience changed 180 degrees. Maybe longer experience and a longer bullwhip can accomplish this. Or perhaps the expectations just will not be as high....
Your information outlet is to be commended and supported, keep up the good and well needed task, with that I bid you a Feliz Ano, to you and yours!
I for one appreciate your commitment of time and effort to desseminate culinary information!

This, just in, from a well known Pátzcuaro resident:

"As reported our very own (and famous) food critic in his blog My Mexican Kitchen: Years's End Restaurant Rumors, Rudolfo is refurbishing the old Cha Cha Cha restaurant. He plans to open Restaurante Lupia by mid February if all goes well. He is very anxious about this move. He promises to continue serving high quality entrees and snacks with same great service we currently enjoy.

Let’s give him all our support and patronage."

I second what Tancho says, his second paragraph, that is. Keep it up!

To my loyal supporters: Thank You!

This blog is made possible by voluntary $$ contributions by readers like you, so that we can continue to eat out in restaurants otherwise beyond our means. :-)

I have a PayPal account around...somewhere.

I thought about writing a Mission Statement and an Ethics Policy, but decided that those would restrain me too much. So it's business as usual.

Please send the contributions to the Don Cuevas Culinary Educational and Travel Fund in small, unmarked bills only. No checks, please.

Remember! The more we eat out, the more we are supporting local businesses.

Gracias, y que tengan un Feliz y Próspero Año.

Saludos,
Don Cuevas

And a well-placed source last night told me that it is not the operator of the Gran Hotel restaurant who plans on opening a joint in the former location of Cha-Cha-Cha. It´s the former chef at the Gran Hotel who´s planning to do that. The Gran Hotel has a different chef now. The menu has changed.

But the former chef, and I do not know why he is "former," is who plans to open the new restaurant. My source was pessimistic about the chances of the restaurant succeeding.

Well, good luck to them, but unfortunately the owner is going to have staying power, which I doubt they have the financial wherewithal to last, what will happen as the funds diminish the quality of the food or help will be cut and so goes the spiral downward. It is a tough business even in good times, although pricey the Italian place/language school/day care turns out a good meal, and he has low overhead, no employees other than family...it may have some staying power.....
Love your restaurant information site! What a great forum to discuss eats in the area!

Tancho, your valued comments leave me more baffled than ever.

You are seeing the failure of this new enterprise even before it opens. Give them a chance! You too, Felipe.

By the way, about Italian food: we just enjoyed a wonderful meal of penne pasta with sweet peppers, onions, tomatoes and generous chunks of zesty, homemade, Italian style fennel sausage—at home.

The wine was decent, some Chilean stuff by way of Costco, and the crisp-crusted baguette, served warm, was not bad, originating in the Mercado Soriana bakery. Our salad was pretty good, too.
